Learn more about the admissions process and admission types for U.S. colleges and universities.
To explain the US college admissions process, or Common Application, we can categorize it into Early, Regular, and Rolling admissions. This doesn't refer to the college-specific process, but rather to the timing of when you submit your application. Therefore, some colleges have early admissions, some have rolling admissions, and so on.
1) Early Admission
There are two types of early admissions: Early Action and Early Decision, and Single Choice Early Action. The main difference between Early Action and Early Decision is that Early Action doesn't require you to attend if you're accepted, whereas Early Decision requires you to apply to only one school because you must attend if you're accepted. Single Choice Early Action allows you to choose only one of four colleges to apply to.
2) Regular Admission
With regular admission, applications open on August 1 for college applications. It's best to start preparing in early May, as soon as your AP exams are over. I typically fill out about 12-15 college applications, weighted by the scope of my dream school/dental school/safety school/etc.
3) Rolling Admission
Rolling admissions have a slightly different timing and are less common at Ivy League schools.
